NFL Week 12, Picks Predictions, 2009 | NESW Sports, Sports Videos

NFL Week 12 Predictions: The NFL playoff race should really begin to heat up this week as the schedule barrells into Thanksgiving, the official marker of the stretch run. There is a definite log jam in the AFC chase as 12 teams still have a somewhat viable shot at postseason play. And the picture in the NFC is not much clearer with 11 teams even now vying for the six coveted positions. This week's action could further the muddy the waters with Pittsburgh taking on Baltimore and New York (Giants) squaring off against Denver. Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens (N/A): The Steelers looked to be in Super Bowl form a couple of weeks ago havingNFL Week 12 Predictions won five straight games and sharing the AFC North lead with Cincinnati. Those days are long gone as back-to-back losses to the Bengals and Chiefs have many questioning Pittsburgh's fortitude. While there is little doubt that the Steelers are capable of turning things around, they had better start doing it this weekend or another playoff run could be in jeopardy. Pittsburgh has not exactly been nails on the road this season, going 2-3 with setbacks at Chicago, Cincinnati, and Kansas City. They have also been abysmal in Baltimore in recent seasons, going 1-5 in their last six games at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Ravens, after an 0-3 start, find themselves in a slightly worse situation than their AFC North rival. At 5-5 Baltimore is still in the playoff picture, but another loss or two could spell doom for John Harbaugh's squad. Since their early success, the Ravens have struggled to win close games, losing five of their last seven contests by an average of 4.6 points. They have also had trouble beating good teams at home, going 1-2 at M&T versus teams with a winning record.

A line has not been posted on this game yet due to a head injury suffered by Ben Roethlisberger in overtime against the Chiefs. However, early reports indicate that the Pro Bowl passer will be able to play against Baltimore.

New York Giants vs Denver Broncos (+6.5): The Giants finally got back in the win column on Sunday, but they needed overtime to get past a game Falcons club at the Meadowlands. Despite their slide, New York is still just a game back of the first place Cowboys, which they face after their Thanksgiving Day battle with Denver. New York was brilliant on the road earlier this season, but they have dropped their last two away contests by an average of 22 points per game.

The Broncos were not as fortunate as the Giants, as their skid reached four games with a horrendous home loss to the Chargers. Now Denver, which looked to have the AFC West locked up a few weeks ago, is fighting for its playoff life. They are presently tied with the Jaguars and Steelers at 6-4 but they are just a game ahead of the Ravens, Texans, and Dolphins in the AFC race. A fifth straight loss would not eliminate them from contention, but it might be a death blow to what must be a fragile team psyche.
